The session begins by examining the general process and goals of sound system alignment, the tasks involved and the decisions required, and then offers a methodological process for working through them, “optimizing our compromises,” using Smaart as a tool to guide and inform these decisions. In this session we examine Smaart’s role in assisting us in working through these tasks and decisions. Sound system “optimization” is the management of many interrelated elements, and the final result represents the sum total of a series of decisions made by an engineer. The most common applications of Smaart in professional audio are in sound system commissioning and alignment – the tasks of verifying that our equipment is operating properly, diagnosing and fixing what is not, and subsequently managing and optimizing the interactions between sources to achieve our desired results. This is a Level 2 Smaart Online Lab session, hosted by Rational Acoustics and taught by Jamie Anderson.
